It's a neighborhood with options (as opposed to the many urban neighborhoods that have few choices that they can control). In many ways, it's like downtowns in successful small and medium sized cities where the merchants whine incessantly about parking problems. Well, that's idea – every downtown or neighborhood commercial district should aspire to have parking problems because of popular demand.

But, your points are well made. Unfortunately, as you explained, the economics of redevelopment invariably work against small, unique businesses and entrepreneurs, and and for big, generic businesses found everywhere.

The city has options, though. They could choose to maintain at least a measure of Wrigleyville's unique character (a la Andersonville) by essentially becoming a partner in its preservation via incentives and subsidies.

Not likely, but it's an option. Even a block or two of structures and businesses with a distinctive Chicago flavor could have a significant impact on helping to preserve and strengthen the district's unique character – despite the addition of new stuff from The United States of Generica School of Design. It's a choice that people with bigger brains than mine should be contemplating.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10923291.post-61417741993355526252013-02-13T15:42:22.566-06:002013-02-13T15:42:22.566-06:00Ditto!
