For much of its history, State Street was Chicago's commercial center: seven department stores, movie palaces, hotels, shops. That day is long gone, but the landmark buildings, created by architects like Daniel Burnham, Holabird & Roche, and Louis Sullivan, endure, restored and repurposed. Marshall Field's, Carson Pirie Scott, the Chicago Theatre, so many more..
Each year, State Street is a major route for the Chicago Marathon. It's probable that the primary focus of the 53,000 runners who descended on the city this year was on finishing the course, but's hope now and again they felt the presence and caught a glimpse of the splendor all around them.
